Printable phonics worksheets

A picture and a row of boxes — the sheet every early reader starts on. Choose your own words from a bank of 60 pictures, including 27 true CVC words, and decide whether the boxes count letters or sounds.

Letters or sounds?

It's the question these sheets live or die on. A spelling sheet draws one box per letter. A phonics sheet draws one box per sound. For a word like cat they're the same three boxes, which is exactly why every phonics program starts with CVC words.

They come apart quickly after that. Fish has four letters and three sounds. Box has three letters and four sounds. Every word here carries a hand-checked sound count, because no rule derives one from the spelling — and a sound box sheet with the wrong number of boxes teaches a child to segment incorrectly.

The pictures are vector line art, so they stay crisp however large you print them — same as the letters on our tracing worksheets.
