- What does ABC stand for?
- Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence. The antecedent is what was happening just before, the behavior is what the child actually did described observably, and the consequence is what happened next.
- How should I write the behavior column?
- Describe what a camera would record. "Threw blocks, left the rug" is usable data; "was defiant" is an interpretation and two people will read it differently.
- How long should I collect data before drawing conclusions?
- Most teams want five to ten incidents before reading a pattern into it. One bad Tuesday is not a trend, and the antecedent column is usually where the answer turns up.
- Is this the same as a behavior chart?
- No — a behavior chart is for the child to fill in and be motivated by. An ABC log is for the adult, and the child usually never sees it.
